Intro to Science Over Superstition

S-O-S, the easiest morse code emergency combination of three short - three long - three short blasts has been used as the backronym for a variety of phrases, the most popular being 'Save our souls'. However, today we need to use that emergency call to beckon a universal abolition of mental slavery and a better understanding of the scientific method.

Religion, for too long, has played on the doubts and fears of the public to push a domination that should have long since been overthrown. Those still in the shackles of faith find that they are in an increasingly maligned minority, hanging on to silly beliefs by the skin of their teeth. There is no harm in believing in supernatural deities, souls and afterlives but when those belief influence the bargaining power of a large segment of the population and are manipulated by an increasingly influential clergy, we need to re-look at the problem.

The recent book by Marci McDonald, "The Armageddon Factor" on the Rise of the Religious Right in Canada, underlines the need for such an introspection sooner rather than later.

In the coming weeks I will endeavour to post topical items that would require a critical look at irrational beliefs and how they have been allowed to influence public policy in Canada and around the world.
